Domestic abuse can happen to anyone from any background. Domestic abuse can be physical, sexual, psychological, emotional or financial abuse in an intimate or family type relationship. It includes stalking and harassment, forced marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), so-called ‘honour’ based abuse, control of your immigration status or other harmful practices. The abuse can be from your partner or ex-partner; from your own family or your partner/spouse’s family. Rarely a one-off incident, domestic abuse forms a pattern of coercive, controlling behaviour which can get worse over time. BME women can experience additional barriers to accessing services such as stereotyping and racism. Sexual abuse is any form of unwanted sexual activity. It includes rape, sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse and any other sexual contact or behaviour that happens without consent.
